Indian Hospitals
‘Medical Tourism’ is a newly coined phrase, which means patients going to another country for Medical Treatment. They go because either those treatments are very expensive or the patient has to wait in a queue for long time in their own country. The word ‘Tourism’ was added to the phrase because, people were going to these exotic places for their medical treatments and thought why not have holiday during this visit and also do some sightseeing.
India is a great Tourist place, but is it the best place for Medical Treatment??
It sure is!! it is the best place in the world for Medical Treatments!!!
Why? Because “Practice makes perfect”. This old saying is so true in the case of the Indian Doctors. India with its more than a billion people, provides ample practice to the Indian Doctors and Surgeons. Only the best Doctors and Surgeons get to work in the top Hospitals. To get there, they would have had a lot of practice by performing hundreds of successful surgeries in a Government or other hospitals, where they worked before, and made a name for themselves.
Also Indian Nursing is something you have to experience to beleive. They are so caring and are so concerned about you. They will try to cater for all your wishes - as long as it is not against Doctors Orders.
To understand why the Indian Doctors are famous world over, you should know their background. The ambition of almost every School kid in India is to become a Doctor. Hundreds of thousands of Students apply for admission to Medical Colleges. Because of this rush, competitive Entrance exams are held and only the top rankers, or only the brightest of the brightest, get admission in Medical Colleges. So from the start, the raw material for making an Indian Doctor is the best. There are many Medical Colleges in India, all strictly controlled by the Government, to keep a good standard of Education, otherwise they lose their license. With so many Medical Colleges, every year, India produces more Doctors than any other Country in the World. Also the Medical Colleges have huge numbers of patients, and the student Doctors gets much more hands on experience than doctors in other countries.
Indian Doctors are in high demand all over the world. From the early 1960s when there was an acute shortage of doctors in countries like USA, UK and Europe, Indian doctors were grabbed by these countries to work there. They soon came to be very well liked and respected for their friendly approach and their high skills. Many of these doctors and surgeons have since returned to India and set up high class hospitals, equipped with the most modern medical gadgets. The Indian Nurses and highly qualified lab and other medical technicians are also very skilled and in high demand in the Western countries. Again every year, India produces more qualified nurses and medical technicians than any other country in the world.
So “Practice makes perfect”. I would trust my life to an Indian surgeon in India any day. India is now the leading Country in the world for Medical Tourism. You can have your surgeries in India almost immediately on landing in India, there is no queue or waiting period and the costs are a fraction of what it would cost in their home countries – up to a tenth or more. India is the destination of choice for a wide range of medical treatments, like

Ayurveda is the 5000 year old treatment system. This has some good remedies for diseases which modern medicine still has no answer for – like Asthma, Allergies, Arthritis, Paralysis of limbs, etc. The Ayurvedic system of medical treatments are based on natural herbal medications and massages with medicated oils by specialist masseurs. Kerala is the leading state in India for Ayurvedic practice. Please visit our dedicated page on Ayurveda Treatments.
When selecting an hospital in India, you should do research and select the Hospital you want to go to. Some Hospitals in India have JCI – Joint Commission International- accreditation. JCI is the world’s best known US accreditation agency giving their seal of approval only to Hospitals which meets the highest US quality standards set by them. Not all the best hospitals in India opt for this accreditation, because it is not compulsory to get it and secondly because they have such a high reputation already, that they do not bother about this accreditation.

Note that some of the Government run hospitals are for the exclusive use of Indian Nationals and the charges there are subsidised by the Government. For example, the number one ranking hospital in the list above is a Government of India Institution and foreigners may not be admitted there. There are many private hospitals as good as the ones mentioned above. We are researching and the contact details will be published on this site soon.
